1. Purpose of the publication: 

It is a unique periodical of academic journal covering the studies on snow, ice, frozen ground and the cryosphere. The journal consciously organizes and systematically publishes studies and results on snow, ice, frozen ground, cryosphere and global change that have high level impact to the nation’s economy in cold regions. It has insisted upon a direction to actively support new ideas, viewpoints, methods and theories in theoretical and applied fields, and promoted domestic and international academic exchange, and the understanding of the cryosphere and global change, and guided the learning progress.

 

2. Subject orientation of this journal:

The Journal of Glaciology and Geocryology intends to publish the papers, reports and reviews involving: (1) properties and process of snow, ice and frozen ground (including artificial frozen ground) and their control; (2) resources and environment in the cryosphere; (3) dynamic variations and interactions of the components of the cryosphere; (4) the interaction between cryosphere and atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, lithosphere and human activity; (5) hydrology and water resources in cold regions; (6) ecosystem and construction in cold regions; (7) global change; (8) engineering and disaster prevention and mitigation in cold regions; (9) cold region biology; (10) application of advanced techniques to the development and investigation in cold regions.

 

3. Domestic influence: 

The journal presents the present condition and developing trend of glaciology, geocryology and research in cold regions in China, it is a window for foreign scientists to get to know glaciology and geocryology in China. The journal is regarded as a major periodical juxtaposed with other international well-known periodicals, in the International Glaciological Society and the International Permafrost Association. It has published more than 20 papers that won prizes of the State, Province or Ministry annually; and many reports became top-ten news or major achievements in the national science and technology field. There were many research results that had made huge impact on social and economic development, such as the construction and reformation of the Qinghai-Tibet Highway and Railway; in the control of snow-hazards in the Tianshan Highways; in the glacial flood forecast and control in Xinjiang; in the exploitation of water resources in Northwest China; and in the ecosystem and environmental protection in the headwaters of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. Through more than 30 years, the journal has developed a great reputation. It not only has a stable group of contributors, including foreign authors, but also extensive readership. Both the quantity and quantities of the published papers have improved continuously, having the indispensable position and extensively international influence.
