Statement on Regulating the Use of AI Tools in Peer Review

Recently, the editorial office has found that some review comments highly resemble content directly generated by AI tools, and there have even been cases where full manuscripts were uploaded to public AI platforms. Although AI technology is advancing rapidly, the peer review process for academic journals demands the highest standards of scientific rigor, confidentiality, and integrity. To clarify responsibilities and prevent academic leaks and intellectual property risks, this journal hereby issues the following regulations and appeals concerning the use of AI tools during the review process:

Uploading the full text or any core part of a manuscript to public AI platforms without verified confidentiality certification is strictly prohibited. Such actions may lead to the leakage or misuse of authors’ original data, models, ideas, and other academic contributions, constituting serious academic misconduct and legal risks.

If a reviewer uses external AI tools (including but not limited to text generation, language polishing, or idea summarization) during the review process, they must explicitly disclose the following in their review comments:

(1) The name and version of the AI tool used;

(2) The specific purpose of the AI tool in the review (e.g., assisting in language refinement, summarizing arguments, etc.);

(3) Whether any part of the manuscript content was input into the tool.

Reviewers bear full responsibility for the final content of their review comments. AI tools may serve only as auxiliary aids and must not replace the reviewer’s independent academic judgment. Any reviewer who fails to truthfully disclose their use of AI tools, or relies on AI to complete substantive review work, will, once verified, have their reviewer status revoked by this journal.

If a received manuscript falls outside the reviewer’s area of expertise (e.g., frozen ground physics, glacier changes, cold-region ecology and engineering, etc.), the reviewer should promptly decline the review and state the reason, and must not use AI tools to conduct the review or draft the comments on their behalf.

This journal solemnly calls upon all reviewers to cherish academic trust and professional honor, and to adhere to the principles of confidentiality and impartiality. Together, let us safeguard the academic reputation and manuscript quality of the Journal of Glaciology and Geocryology, and put an end to any form of AI?mediated peer review or data leakage.
